“But what if someone needs me!?”
.....What if someone doesn’t?
...What if the person that needs you is right in front of you...?
Rachel the owner of @3in30podcast interviewed Dr. Katie Penry in /Ep 023: How to Stop Looking at Your Phone so Much–and Why It Matters. /

This episode is LIFE CHANGING!  Dr. Katie Penry is a licensed clinical psychologist & has two kiddies. Katie & Rachel share some AMAZINGLY INSIGHTFUL KNOWLEDGE that I wanna echo today! (Direct link to podcast episode HERE!)

Dr. Penry shares that 80% of child’s development happens in the first three years of life. Healthy emotional and social development are some of the biggest lessons learned.

A HUGE part of this? Eye contact with the child’s caregiver.

Dr. Penry shared that parents act as mirrors for all kids. We are actively teaching our children that everything there is to celebrate about them, is in the phone.  We enforce this by looking at a screen to capture our children instead of looking them in the eye and being IN THE MOMENT.

Think about it… Birthday, Christmas, bike ride, graduation, ANY & all achievements (at any age) tends to begin with “Hold on! Lemme get out my phone and video/take photo of this!”
Katie speaks truth when she says "we cannot celebrate our kid’s big moments through the phone and then wonder why they go to the phone to find themselves".
We’ve taught them that we (as parents) are here in the phone more than we really care to be fully in THEIR moment.
The phone is the priority and all their achievements and good things about them is IN THAT PHONE.

How do we change this??
Dr. Katie Penry gives three insightful ways to make our phones work FOR us and to do better to look up:
1. Focus on presence & place!
Instead of focusing on minutes/hours you will allow yourself to be on social media, set up tech-free places. Examples! No phone at the park, while breast feeding, at dinner table, in the bathroom, the first hour after school etc.
2. Tell your kids why you are on it & what you’re doing.
Tell them why you’re on your phone as well as a reason! Example “Hey I am going to get on Pinterest for about 15 min to look for a recipe so you can go play for a while!”
That way when your kids ask you “What are you doing?” and you don’t have a reason to be on the phone? You will be able to respond with “I don’t have a reason to be on the phone currently, so I’ll put it away until I do!”
3. Use your phone to prevent distraction!
Get rid of (disable) all on phone notifications, Turn on times of do not disturb, turn off notifications at a certain time.  “But what if someone needs me!?” Dr. Penry said she absolutely loves hearing this question, because she always responds with “What if someone doesn’t?” Rachel,  the podcast owner went further into this saying that so many people think this, but what if the person that needs me is right in front of me? We’re SO worried about if someone may, possibly, potentially need us that we ignore the need that is happening right in front of us.

I honestly did this ONE weekend & I have never wanted to go back... I haven't gone back since....

This is something I have talked to SO MANY people about. Consumers, friends, other business owners (of all sizes) and the consensus is clear; WE NEED OUR TIME BACK.

WE NEED OUR SOCIAL IN PERSON TIME.
WE NEED to disconnect and shake up the 'norm'.

Whether you are a consumer, a creator, a business owner, or a robot... WE NEED TO #freetheweekend.
